Description

A pair of weavers’ cottages dating from the early to mid-18th century, located on London Road, Chippenham. The cottages were originally constructed of limestone rubble, squared and coursed to the front facade, with freestone quoins and architraves. They have a continuous double-Roman tile roof and stone stacks to the gable ends. Each cottage originally followed a one-unit plan and now features a 20th-century left wing to number 80.

The cottages were originally symmetrical in their two-window range, though they now display a three-window appearance. There is a blind window to the party wall, with a segmental arch on the first floor. A continuous hoodmould, supported by shaped brackets, covers the paired 19th-century four-panel doors. The doors are flanked by 20th-century two-light casements; original stone-mullioned windows are present except for a ground-floor right shop window at number 82, which contains a three-rows-of-five-panes early 19th-century shop window. The 20th-century left wing to number 80 is two storeys high and similar in style. The interior of the cottages has not been inspected.
