Description

This is a terrace of ten weavers' cottages located on London Road, Chippenham. The cottages were built in the late 18th or early 19th century, before 1831. They are constructed from painted squared and coursed limestone rubble, with ashlar details including architraves, platbands and quoins. Much of the rubble is now rendered. The roof is covered with double-Roman tiles and has brick stacks at the gable ends and party walls. The cottages have a double-depth plan with rear entrances and later rear extensions. They are three storeys high, with a ten-window front. The original windows have been replaced with modern casements, but retain their original mullions with roll-edged architraves; the windows are two-light on the second floor, three-light on the first floor, and alternate three and four-light on the ground floor. The rear elevation is similar, with single-storey additions. The interior was not inspected. The terrace retains a substantially complete and early layout typical of artisan cottages.
