Description

The Pack Horse is a public house located on London Road in Chippenham, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble with freestone quoins, a doorcase, and painted dressings around the windows. The building features a 20th-century plain-tile gambrel roof with two-light raked dormers and brick stacks at the gable ends. Attached to the right is a 19th-century stable block, which is now used as a restaurant, and there is also a 20th-century rear extension.

The exterior of the building is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. The central entrance features a 19th-century four-panel door, which is glazed at the top and set within a chamfered architrave. It has a flat hood with moulded edges supported by brackets. On both floors, the door is flanked by three-light windows with cyma-moulded stone mullions, 19th-century small panes, and four-pane sashes in the centre lights. Above the door, there is a similar two-light window. The one-storey stable block has no windows on the front and a 20th-century four-pane window on the right side.

Inside, on the ground floor to the right, there is an open fire with a chamfered stone surround. A roughly chamfered beam with protruding knots rests on the lintel of the right-hand window. On the first floor, there is a door made of three wide planks and four chamfered beams.
