Description
40 and 42 High Street is a house that later became a pair of shops, currently in one occupation. It dates from the late 18th century, with shop fronts added in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with dressings, featuring a truncated brick stack and a stone slate roof.
The structure is U-shaped, with single-depth front and rear wings surrounding a through-passage. It has two storeys and an attic, with a window arrangement of 2:2. No. 40, which is half the width of No. 42, has a full-width shop front with thin mullions supporting plate-glass windows, consoles for the fascia, and a recessed right-hand doorway that includes a notable 18th-century fanlight and a four-panel door. There is also a recessed shop window between the main windows. The first floor has 2/2-pane sash windows with rendered lintels in exposed boxes, and there are two casement dormers with cambered heads. No. 42, located to the right, features a full-width shop front with quoins above and a plain fascia, along with widely spaced windows that have rendered lintels supporting 8/8-pane sashes in exposed boxes. Notable external features include a cast-iron hopper with a lion head, a decorative downpipe, and a full-width gutter adorned with an ivy leaf pattern.
Inside, the building includes a winder stair located over the through-passage and a first-floor front room that features a dividing elliptical arch.
