Description
6 and 7 Colliergate is a house that has been converted into two shops, dating from the early 18th century. It was altered and subdivided in the late 19th century, with the shopfronts modified in the 20th century. The front is finished in stucco with a timber doorcase, while the rear is made of orange brick in English garden wall bond, topped with a pantile roof and a rendered stack.
The exterior features a two-storey, two-window front. The shopfront for No. 7 includes an earlier front doorcase with plain pilasters, a moulded impost band, and a cornice hood supported by slender consoles. It has a replacement door and fanlight set within a round-arched architrave. No. 6 has a 16-pane sash window on the first floor, while No. 7 has a 12-pane sash. There is a raised band above the windows. The rear of the building has a three-storey, one-bay gabled front, with a 4-pane sash window beneath a segmental arch on each floor.
Inside, No. 6 retains one flight of the original staircase between the first and second floors, featuring a close string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail that ramps up to square newels with attached half balusters. No. 7 has exposed beams of heavy scantling on the ground floor.
