Description

43 and 43A High Street is a pair of houses that have been converted into one house and shop, dating from the late 18th century. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with a brick party wall stack on the right and features a stone slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with a central through-passage and a rear left-hand range.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and consists of a six-window range. The front is regular but has unevenly spaced windows and rough quoins. There is a right-of-centre six-panel doorway, with the top pair of panels being glazed, and a late 19th-century projecting shop front that includes thin mullions and a console cornice with a central recessed doorway. The windows have roughly-dressed stone flat arches and include 2/2-pane horned exposed sashes; the window to the right of the doorway has a timber lintel. The head of the right-hand ground-floor window extends to the left above a straight joint with rough jamb stones. The building also features three gabled casement dormers.

The rear elevation has three gables, with the tallest on the north side and the smallest central gable featuring mullion leaded casements. The south gable projects and has a mid-19th-century lower range attached, which includes mullion first-floor windows. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to have chamfered ceiling beams.
