Description
44 and 44A Market Square is a house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring squared quoins and dressings, and has a gabled stone slate roof with a brick stack at one end. It has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, displaying a three-window range.
The late 19th-century shop front includes console-brackets supporting a moulded cornice, along with a 20th-century door and windows. To the left, there are timber lintels above a 19th-century casement window with glazing bars, and on the first floor, there are late 19th-century two-pane sash windows. The building features a heavy 17th-century wooden eaves cornice and a gabled roof dormer with a late 19th-century two-light casement. The interior of the first floor has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
