Description
The Butter Cross is a market building located in Witney Market Square, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with a cupola added in 1683 and 19th-century repair work. It features a render over a timber frame with cross gables and is supported by 13 round limestone ashlar piers. The roof is covered with stone slates and has a lean-to pentice roof on all sides. At the top, there is a clock-turret with a cupola and a sundial, which has a medallion inscribed "Erected 1683 by Gulilmus Blake Armiger of Cogges." Inside, there is a central stone pier that stands on three stone steps, and dentilled wall plates are trenched across the cross-beams to support the roof. The Blake family, who owned Manor Farm in Cogges, are historically associated with this building. The Butter Cross is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
