Description
No. 50 Market Square is a house that has been converted into offices and a restaurant. It dates from the early 19th century and has undergone some later alterations. The building features stuccoed walls with rusticated quoin strips, and while the roof is not visible, there are brick stacks. The original layout of the building is unclear. It stands three storeys high and has a five-window range.
An early 20th-century stone ashlar portico is present, which includes pilasters at the shop front on the left and Doric columns supporting a three-bay rounded loggia on the right. The fenestration above is arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, with six-pane sash windows flanked by blind windows in the outer bays. A moulded cornice runs beneath the parapet, which features raised architrave panels. The right side wall has mid-19th-century fenestration with two-pane sashes set in moulded and keyed segmental architraves. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
