Description
The Former Marlborough Hotel is a hotel dating from around 1800, although it has earlier origins. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a rendered front and features a gabled Welsh slate roof, along with brick end stacks and a 17th-century stack with stone and brief flues at the rear. The building has an L-plan with a rear left range and stands three storeys tall with a five-window range.
The entrance includes a 20th-century door with an overlight and a bracketed cornice. To the left, there is a canted bay window with a tripartite sash, while to the right, a one-storey projection of squared stone features tripartite sashes flanking a six-pane sash and a carriage entry. The first floor has eight-pane sashes and the second floor has six-pane sashes, all set in moulded stone architraves. Above the door, there is a relief of the Marlborough Coat-of-arms.
At the rear, there is an early 18th-century wing made of coursed limestone rubble, topped with a gabled stone slate roof and a brick ridge stack. This wing has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window range that includes a late 18th-century tripartite sash and six-pane sashes, as well as four hipped roof dormers with 20th-century casements. Further back, there is an L-shaped block from the 18th century, built with similar materials and featuring concrete tiles on the rear.
Inside, there is a 16th-century moulded partition beam to the right of the door and early 19th-century quarter-turn stairs at the rear. The rear wing has stop-chamfered beams.
