Description

Batt House is a house built around 1725, located in Witney Market Square. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a gabled stone slate roof with stone end stacks. The house has a central-staircase plan and is designed in an early Georgian style. It stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical five-window range. The entrance boasts an early 18th-century six-panelled door with an overlight, set within a pedimented doorcase supported by Tuscan pilasters. The windows are late 19th-century plate-glass sashes with raised architraves and triple keyblocks, except for the attic. The exterior is enhanced by raised chamfered quoins, raised storey bands, and a moulded cornice beneath the parapet, along with gabled dormers.

To the rear left is an L-shaped wing from the 18th century, constructed of partly roughcast limestone rubble, featuring a gabled concrete tile roof and a stone slate roof at the back. The rear of the main block includes an early 18th-century stair turret and a mid-19th-century lean-to extension with a reset 18th-century two-light window.

Inside, the house contains 18th-century panelled doors. The hall features a stone flag floor and moulded door architraves with pulvinated friezes. There is a fine dog-leg staircase with a landing, showcasing turned balusters on a closed string. The room to the left has a panelled dado and bayleaf-moulded architraves around the windows, along with a moulded cornice. The room to the right features bolection panelling, a dentilled cornice, and a moulded architrave around the fireplace, which is flanked by bracketed stands and keyed segmental-arched alcoves. The rear wing has cased beams.
