Description
Nos. 38 and 40 Market Square is a shop and dwelling, now functioning solely as a shop, built around 1870 to 1880. The building is constructed of stucco with raised quoins and a storey band over a brick base, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof and featuring brick end stacks. It has a three-unit plan, two storeys, and an attic, with a three-window range.
The entrance on the left of centre consists of a 20th-century door with an overlight and a bracketed flat hood. The shop front features three late 19th-century cast-iron windows, each with leaf capitals on elaborate shafts entwined with foliage, and moulded cornices adorned with friezes of diamond patterns, leaves, and rosettes. Note that the shafts of the left window have been removed.
On the first floor, there are tripartite plate-glass sash windows set in moulded architraves. The building has bracketed eaves and three hipped roof dormers that contain 20th-century casements with slate-hung cheeks. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
