Description

47 and 49 High Street is a pair of houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the 17th century and were altered in the early 19th century. The buildings are made of rendered and roughcast limestone rubble, with brick gable stacks on the left side of each house and a stone slate roof. They have a double-depth plan and are two storeys tall with an attic, each featuring a one-window range. The eaves run continuously, but the ridge of the roof steps down at No. 49.

Both houses have right-hand doors; No. 47 has a rectangular three-light overlight above a panel door, while No. 49 has a half-panel door. The mid-19th century shop fronts have panelled jambs, console fascias, and plate glass. The first-floor windows below the eaves are in exposed frames; No. 47 has a two-over-two pane sash window, with a six-over-six pane sash in the dormer, while No. 49 features an eight-over-eight pane sash and a three-over-three pane dormer. At the rear, there is a projecting gable.

Inside No. 47, there is a slim Doric column in the entrance hall, and the ground floor has been opened up. In No. 49, there is a left-hand rear stair flight, a first-floor door leading to the attic stair, and a 19th-century roof with purlins.
