Description

48 and 50 High Street are a pair of houses and shops built in the late 18th century, with the shop fronts and number 50 being refronted in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of coursed limestone rubble with dressings, featuring brick gable stacks and a stone slate roof. They are designed in a double-depth plan and stand two storeys tall with an attic, presenting a five-window range.

The continuous pair has rusticated quoins and coped gables with moulded kneelers. The late 19th-century shop fronts have panelled jambs supported by consoles and a fascia with a cornice. Below, there is an ashlar plinth with three plate-glass lights that have ogee heads and thin mullions flanking central recessed doorways, which are topped with similarly-arched overlights.

Number 48 features late 20th-century casements with cambered heads, a central pair of attic casements, and a right-hand triple casement roof dormer, along with a single-storey outshut at the rear that has a single dormer. Number 50 has altered first-floor windows with keyed cambered heads and rusticated jambs for horned plate-glass sashes, as well as two gabled dormers with 20th-century top-hung casements and timber brackets at the eaves. The right-hand gable has a blocked doorway and a left-hand sash, with a small rear gable above a gabled range over number 50A Ingram Street. The interior has not been inspected.
