Description
A pair of attached houses, now shops, dating from the early 18th century. Number 32 has a rendered front, while number 33 is brick, both with limestone dressings, brick stacks to the end and ridge, and a pantile coped end-gable roof. They are built on a double-depth plan and are in an Early Georgian style. The houses are three storeys high with a five-window front. Shallow pilasters are present at the ends and centre, topped by a timber modillion eaves cornice and leaded gutter, alongside a coped party wall and gables. Two 20th-century shop fronts occupy the ground floor. Matching first- and second-floor windows have irregularly-spaced stone bolection-moulded architraves; number 33 has 6/6-pane sashes, with the two windows to the left set slightly apart, while number 32 has a double-width 8/8-pane sash to the left and four 4/4-pane sashes to its right. The rear of each house features a projecting half-hipped wing, and a central stairwell with a semicircular-arched stair window containing 9/9-pane sashes. Internally, number 32 retains full-height ground-floor panelling and an eared fireplace. A right-hand open-well staircase includes a closed string, barleysugar balusters, a moulded rail, square newels, and panelled wainscot. A rear first-floor fireplace has a bracketed cornice above, and dado panelling. Number 33 was remodelled in 1991.
