Description

The Punchbowl Public House is a mid-18th century building, altered in the early 19th century and with a late 19th-century public house front. It is located on the north side of Old Market Street in Bristol. The building is stuccoed with limestone dressings, features a brick stack on the right-hand side, and has a ground floor finished with green glazed tiles. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high, with a two-window front.

The symmetrical front is topped by a parapet. It has elliptical arched doorways to the outer sides, each with a six-pane fanlight and a half-glazed double door. A wider elliptical arched window occupies the centre of the ground floor, with darker pilaster strips that have reeded necks, and a fascia finished with brown glazed brick. The first-floor windows are low, and the second-floor windows are taller, each with horned plate-glass sashes.

Inside, the building retains cross beams, with the front beam stop-chamfered with moulded stops. A 20th-century staircase is located on the left-hand side of the building.
