Description
40 and 41 Old Market Street is a pair of attached houses, now functioning as one office, dating from the mid-17th century. The exterior features a rendered finish, a central brick and stone valley stack, and pantile roofs with cross gables. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with a three-window range. Each gable has 20th-century plate-glass shop fronts with central doorways. No. 41 is wider and includes two 18th-century plate-glass sash windows on the first floor and a broader second-floor sash window with a 2/2 pane configuration in flush boxes. No. 40 features a recessed first floor with paired sash windows that have margin bars in a shallow bay, topped by an overhanging second floor with a square 2/2 pane sash window in a flush box. The gable eaves have barge boards, and a central ridged roof connects to No. 39. The base is made of pennant rubble, supporting the large brick stack. The interior was completely remodelled around 1985.
