Description
36 and 37 Old Market Street is a pair of attached houses, now used as offices, dating from the early 18th century. The buildings are constructed of brick and render, featuring brick end stacks, slate dormers, and a pantile roof. They have a double-depth plan and are designed in the early Georgian style, standing three storeys tall with an attic and a three-window range.
The ground floor of No. 36 has a 20th-century shop front beneath the brick upper floors. To the right, there is a full-height canted bay that interrupts a deep modillion eaves cornice, which continues around the ends of the building. The first-floor windows have concrete lintels and consist of plate-glass sashes, while the second floor features enlarged 20th-century casements. There are also two hipped dormers. The bay has small modillion cornices on each floor and 20th-century sashes with margin bars, alongside flanking plate-glass sashes.
The interior of the buildings was completely remodelled around 1985.
