Description

No. 42 Old Market Street is a house that has been converted into an office. It was built in the early 18th century and restored around 1980. The exterior features a rendered finish with limestone dressings, a brick side stack, and a hipped roof covered in pantiles. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the early Georgian style, standing three storeys tall with a three-window range.

The 18th-century shop front includes rusticated pilasters and a deep modillion eaves cornice that returns at the ends. The attractive early 19th-century shop front features two eight-pane bow windows flanking a two-leaf door, with fluted timber pilasters supporting a dentil cornice that bows out above the doorway. The first floor has narrow six-over-six pane sash windows beneath raised pediments, with the central window being segmental, while the shorter second-floor windows are also six-over-six pane sashes in flush boxes. A hipped dormer with casement windows is set into the roof, which has shallow sprocketed eaves.

Inside, the building was largely remodelled around 1980, but there is a rear ground-floor fireplace set in an ashlar niche next to a cast-iron safe with fluted stone sides and two-leaf doors above. The building was truncated to two storeys by 1974 and restored around 1980.
