Description
68 and 70 Colston Street is a pair of attached houses that have been converted into shops and offices. They date from the late 17th century and were refenestrated in the 18th century, with 19th-century shop fronts added. The buildings are constructed from rendered timber-frame with a central brick stack and have a pantile roof. They each have two storeys and an attic, with No.70 being a single storey and attic. The front features a two-window range and steep gables, with shop fronts that include a jettied first floor and boxed eaves. The shop fronts have central doorways flanked by shallow bowed windows with glazing bars. The first-floor canted oriels contain a 10/10-pane sash window in No.70 and a casement window with glazing bars in No.68, along with 8/8-pane sashes in flush frames above. Inside, No.70 features a central right-hand winder stair and chamfered lateral ceiling beams, reflecting a typical plan form of other mid-17th century houses, such as those found in King Street.
