Description

This building comprises two adjoining properties, 71A and 75, located on Brown Street, with 71A also fronting onto Trinity Street. The core of the structure dates back to the 16th century, with later alterations made through subsequent periods.

No. 71A occupies a corner site and features two storeys. It is timber-framed, with a brick ground floor and plaster infilling on the first floor, now rendered. The first floor oversails, displaying boxed beam ends. The gable end facing Brown Street is clad in tile hanging and topped with a steep-pitched gable roof covered in old tiles, with a raised section at the east end and a small gabled dormer. A 19th-century sash window is set into the gable end facing Brown Street. The ground floor has a former plate glass 19th-century shop window with a fascia board and a partially glazed door. The front elevation to Trinity Street includes a loft door, partly converted into a window, and three 19th-century casement windows. A yard entrance is on the left, and the ground floor has a mix of late 19th-century casements, windows, and a glazed entrance door.

No. 75 continues the Brown Street frontage and is likely an 18th-century addition or a refacing of an earlier structure. It is two storeys high, formerly colourwashed brick, now rendered, and features a gable with a roof of old tiles and shallow eaves. It has two renewed casements on the first floor. The ground floor originally contained two early 19th-century shop windows and two doors; it now has three-light casements and a central door with side lights.

The buildings form a group with Nos 14 to 46 (even) on Trinity Street, and with nos 71A to 81 (odd) on Brown Street.
