Description
No. 81 on Brown Street is a mid-18th century building featuring two storeys and an attic. It is constructed of red brick set on a projecting plinth, with a plain string course at the first floor level. The roof has a steep pitch and is covered with old tiles, complemented by a moulded eaves cornice. The symmetrical front has four windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor, all featuring flush architrave framed sashes with intact glazing bars on the first floor and flat brick arches above. The entrance boasts a six-panel door within a reeded surround, accented by reeded roundels at the corners and a flat moulded cornice hood, with a bed mould that has ball ornaments breaking forward to the sides. Inside, there is a notable staircase with a moulded string, cut brackets supporting the treads, turned balusters, and a rail that ramps up to the newels. This building is part of a group that includes Nos. 71A and 75 to 81.
