Tithings

Tithings is a house located at the end of a street row on Mere Castle Street. It is probably from the 18th century but has undergone significant modifications in the early 19th century, including changes to the roof. The building is constructed from squared and coursed limestone in various thicknesses, with a squared rubble plinth and a plain tile roof featuring fish-scale tiles on the lowest courses. There are three ridge stacks, two of which are made from 18th-century bricks.

The main front of the house is situated below the 20th-century street level. The right side of the front has two storeys and three windows, all of which are 2-light small-pane casements; the ground floor windows have a thin central mullion. There is a central six-panel fielded door beneath a 20th-century flat-roofed porch. To the left, there is a plain rubble wall section with two 2-light casements, followed by a higher section that features a pair of plank doors with a keyed segmental head and two additional casements. The division between Tithings and the adjacent Ridge House is not clearly defined.

At the back, there are various 12-pane and 16-pane sash windows, along with two 3-light 20th-century casements. A small pointed light is located between the first and second floors. There is a 20th-century door leading to a lean-to porch, as well as another doorway to the right.
