Description
The Close is a house located at the end of a row on Mere Church Lane. Originally built in the 18th century, it has been significantly modified in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is made of coursed and squared rough-dressed limestone, with the left end featuring large flush irregular quoin stones made of Chilmark stone and a plain tile roof. The house has two storeys and an attic with three windows across the front. The ground floor includes four-pane sash windows with wood lintels on either side of a 19th-century partially glazed door, which is sheltered by a flat timber hood. On the first floor, there are three 2-light small-paned wood casements with wood lintels, and a small single light window in the right gable of the attic. There is also an opening to a cellar on the right and a small light window in the left gable. The house features small brick gable stacks. A deep back wing is present but is not of special interest. The building is included primarily for its group value, as it helps to enclose the space to the north of the church.
