ST 8032-8132 MERE CHURCH STREET (south side) 6/39 Memorial Cross to Julia Elizabeth Chafyn-Grove

GV II

Monument in form of churchyard cross. Erected 1904 in memory of Julia Elizabeth Chafyn-Grove who died 1891. Limestone base, sandstone shaft and calvary. A square base in 3 steps carrying a tall square plinth with shouldered cornices; main tapered octagonal shaft broached to square base and carrying a good carved calvary to reverse curve pointed aedicules. Plinth carries inscription on east face. This is a well proportioned and executed version of a mediaeval church cross used as a monument.
