Description
The Brading War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1921, designed as a Calvary cross. It is located in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, to the south-west of the church.
The memorial is made of Portland stone. It features a tall tapered shaft that is hollow-chamfered, with the chamfers extending into the head of the cross from a broached base. On the south face of the cross, there is a figure of Christ, which is sheltered by a gabled canopy. The cross stands on a tapered plinth, which is supported by a base made up of three octagonal steps. The bottom step is constructed from rubble masonry blocks, topped with Portland stone.
The front face of the plinth displays the inscription, "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF BRADING MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919," while the names of those who served are inscribed on the other sides of the plinth. Additionally, lettering added to the front face of the top step reads, "AND IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-45," with the names of those lost during that conflict recorded on the three southern faces of the step below. The inscriptions are carved in relief within recessed panels.
