Description
Nos 18 and 19 on The Brittox are a pair of mid-19th century houses that stand three storeys tall and are faced in Bath stone. They feature central and flanking piers with banded rustication and a moulded string course that breaks across the façade. The houses have a projecting moulded cornice and a parapet with decorative angle and centre pieces, topped with coping. The parapet projects forward over the centre of each house, featuring a round-headed gable with a shaped surround, crowned by a finial that contains a dormer with two arched lights. Each house has one window on the second floor, which consists of tripartite sash windows with later glazing bars, divided by pilasters that extend down into an apron. Above these pilasters, brackets support the cornice, which slightly projects over them.
On the first floor, there are large canted stone bays with plain pilaster strips, entablatures, and pediments above the central sections. The hipped stone roof is adorned with antifixae, and there are two-light transomed casements on the sides and front, with projecting bases for the pilaster strips.
The ground floor of No 18 features a Victorian shop front framed by single and double panelled pilasters, with a frieze and cornice that break forward at the base of the bay windows. It has two windows with two mullioned lights, one of which is splayed into the door, with a panelled base and the rest glazed. A rectangular fanlight is positioned above the door, which is to the right and consists of six panels, also with a rectangular fanlight. No 19 has a mid-20th century shop front that has been inserted.
Nos 18 to 26 on The Brittox form a group.
