Description

No 16 The Brittox is a building located on a corner site with Monday Market Street, dating from the early 19th century. It is three storeys high, rendered and painted, featuring a low pitch hipped slate roof. The first floor has a sill course, with one window facing The Brittox, one at the angled corner, and two on Monday Market Street. There are also three blind windows: one on the second floor facing The Brittox, one on the first floor at the corner, and one on the second floor facing Monday Market Street. The remaining windows are recessed sashes with intact glazing bars and block sills.

On the ground floor facing Monday Market Street, there is a mid-19th century shop window with four mullioned lights, a moulded frame, a deep fascia, and a blind case. A similar window with three lights is present on The Brittox side. An entrance to a passage leading to the shop door is located at the angled corner, featuring a thin panelled surround and roundel corner blocks. There is a side window to the passage and a double glazed shop door at the end.

Adjoining to the right and facing Monday Market Street is a 13th-century house that is part of the same property. This building is three storeys high, constructed of painted brick on a stone plinth, with a second floor stone sill course and a low pitch gable end slate roof with a wooden eaves band. It has three windows on the second floor, with tripartite sashes flanking a single sash window on the first floor, all featuring keystones and intact glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century canted bay window without glazing bars on the left, topped with a small cornice. The central entrance consists of a five-panel door, with the top panel glazed, set in a moulded stone surround beneath a flat moulded wooden hood with a panelled soffit supported by cut brackets. To the right of the entrance is a tripartite sash window with intact glazing bars.
