Description
25 The Brittox is a late 18th century building that stands three storeys tall. It is constructed from Bath stone, with the ground floor painted white and featuring horizontal chamfered jointing on a raised black plinth. The front of the building is symmetrical, though the window spacing on the ground floor varies. It has flanking and slightly projecting bays, each adorned with a pair of fluted Doric pilasters at the upper part, which rest on a moulded string at the first floor level. A moulded entablature and blocking course extend forward over the end bays. The three central bays are set in a slightly recessed panel at the upper part, with three windows on the upper floors. The ground floor features a pair of 19th century shop windows in the central section, one with two lights and the other with four lights; these lights are arched and separated by slender columns, with the spandrels at the angles and between the lights intricately carved with bunches of grapes. The detail of these windows is notable. Each of the flanking projections has one door; the left-hand door, originally a two-panel studded house door, has been converted into a shop window, while the right-hand door is a glazed 19th century shop door. Both doors have plain rectangular fanlights. Nos 18 to 26 The Brittox form a group.
