Description
Nos 4 and 4A on The Brittox are 18th-century buildings that rise three storeys with an attic. They are constructed from plum-coloured brick, featuring red brick window surrounds and string courses above and below the first-floor windows. The corners are accentuated with chamfered stone quoins. A bold moulded wood cornice with carved scroll brackets adds to the architectural detail, and the hipped slate roof is complemented by two dormer casements. The second floor has five casement windows with late 18th-century pointed arched top panes, although one is blocked. The first floor features five sash windows with red rubber heads. At the corners, there are elaborate cast lead rainwater heads from the 18th century, with modern downpipes. Despite the presence of poor modern shop fronts, the building maintains a front of considerable distinction. Nos 4 to 7 form a group.
