Description

The Market Hall, built in 1835 by Pollard of Frome, is a Grade II listed building located on the northeast side of Market Place. This structure is made of ashlar and features a two-storey front with three bays, highlighted by a slightly projecting central bay topped with a square clock tower. The ground floor has a rusticated treatment on a projecting plinth, featuring three arched openings with arches that spring from a panelled string. Above, a moulded string at the first-floor level extends over the central arch in a pediment shape.

The upper floor is divided into three panels, each adorned with two wide flanking panelled pilasters that support a plain frieze, cornice, and a blocking course with a panelled centre. The clock tower is equipped with a clock on each face, decorated with corner honeysuckle ornament, and features narrow angle Doric pilasters that support a frieze, a bracketed cornice, and a blocking course topped with cast iron cresting and a weather cock. The ground floor arches are fitted with plain cast iron gates.

Inside, the Market Hall consists of two consecutive halls, with the second hall at a slightly higher level. The walls are painted brick with blind segmental arcading. Lean-to side roofs rise to a gabled roof clerestory above the concourse, supported by cast iron columns with Y brackets. The clerestory windows in the first hall have five lights, while those in the second hall have six lights. A brick wall separates the two halls, featuring a semi-circular arched entrance with the Town's coat of arms above. The second hall has a flat roof, and the eastern end wall includes a segmental arched exit with a five-light window above.

The Market Hall, along with Nos 29 to 42 (consecutive), forms a group, and all the listed buildings on the southwest side, southeast side, Market Hall, Market Cross, and the Fountain also form a group.
