Description
HSBC Bank is an 18th-century building that has been altered. It stands three storeys high, with a modern stone front on the ground floor featuring six pairs of engaged Doric columns, a plain frieze, and a modillion cornice in front of rusticated stone walls, which may be original and are arranged in three bays on the right. The upper storeys are constructed of red brick and include a moulded and bracketed stone cornice, along with a brick parapet topped with stone coping. The building has a hipped tiled roof.
There are five recessed sash windows on the upper floors, all retaining their glazing bars. The third window from the right on the first floor is tripartite, and all windows feature keystones. The ground floor has five windows and a modern corner door at the angle. The return front facing St John's Street mirrors this design with three windows.
This building is part of a group with other listed buildings on the south-west side and south-east side, including the Market Hall, Market Cross, and Fountain. Additionally, St John's Street Nos 1 to 5 form another group.
