Description

40 Market Place is a three-storey building dating from 1866, constructed from Bath stone. It features a symmetrical 'Venetian Gothic' façade that showcases delicate details and good proportions. The first floor has a moulded string at the cill level, while the cornice is adorned with a carved bed mould of foliage ornament on a machicolated string. The slate roof is complemented by flanking chimneys made of panelled stone, each topped with bracketed cornice heads.

On the third floor, there are three arched windows, each surrounded by an architrave that sweeps out at the base over moulded cills supported by a pair of brackets. Each window is highlighted by a carved keystone and a wrought iron scroll pattern flower guard. The first floor features a central curved bay with narrow arched windows on the curved sides and a two-light casement in the centre, which has curved corners and a flat top. This bay is decorated with a carved frieze and spandrels, a carved mask keystone, and a cornice with a stone ogee-shaped roof, topped with a fruit basket finial and supporting scrolls carved into the main wall face. The window lights are separated by narrow shafts with carved caps, and the curved apron below is bowl-shaped and corbelled.

Flanking the central bay are two additional windows, designed similarly with carved spandrels, keystones, friezes, cornices, and cushion tops. The sides of the building are framed by 'Gothic' shafts with carved caps. The string course breaks forward over brackets for the cill on the ground floor, where there is a four-panel door to the left with shaped upper panels and a plain fanlight, set within an arched opening that features an architrave and carved keystone. This is surrounded by semi-engaged columns with carved caps and a moulded base, supporting a gabled canopy with moulded coping and a carved finial. There is a modern shop front to the right that is in keeping with the overall design. The interior may also be of interest. Notably, there are no glazing bars.

The building is part of a group that includes Nos 29 to 42 and The Market Hall.
