Description
Nos 36 and 37 Market Place is an 18th-century building that stands three storeys tall. It is constructed of painted brick and features stone strings at the first and second floor cill levels. The building has a moulded stone cornice and a brick parapet topped with moulded stone coping, along with a steeply pitched slate roof.
The upper floors contain four windows, with the left-hand two on the second floor having contemporary flower guards made of wrought iron and cast lead ornament. On the ground floor, there is a central six-panel door set in an arched opening with a plain tympanum. Each shop front is from the early 19th century and is framed by panelled pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. The shop window of No 36, which originally had four arched lights, has been altered, and there is a door to the left. No 37 features a glazed door with a plain rectangular fanlight to the right. The glazing for Nos 29 to 42 has been altered but retains original flush-panelled shuttering.
Nos 29 to 42 and The Market Hall form a group.
