Description
No 31, formerly The Cromwell Hotel, is an early 19th-century building located on the northeast side of Market Place. It has three storeys and a basement, with a façade finished in painted stucco. There is a band at the sill level of the first floor, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course at the top. The building is topped with a slate roof.
The upper floor features four windows, while the ground floor has three windows and two basement windows. To the right of the centre, there are six-panel double doors set in an arched recess, which has moulded caps at the springing of the arch. Above the doors is an arched fanlight with curved glazing, struck from a different centre, and there is a central lantern that is original to the building. The entrance is accessed by four stone steps, which are flanked by contemporary plain cast iron rails and scrapers. The building exhibits good proportions.
No 31 is part of a group with Nos 29 to 42 and The Market Hall.
