Description
The Fountain, erected in 1879 in memory of Sotheron-Estcourt, is a notable structure located in the Market Place. It features a large stone octagonal basin with sides that have inverted segmental curves and angle piers. The basin is topped with bronze eagles and includes smaller drinking troughs on each face, which have lion 'mask' spouts. At the center of the large basin, a massive central shaft with a grouped, curved formation supports an upper basin, from which a tall group of engaged columns rises, forming the base for a statue of Mr. Estcourt. The fountain is set amidst picturesque pollarded plane trees. This fountain, along with the listed buildings on the South-West Side, South-East Side, Market Hall, and Market Cross, forms a cohesive group of historic structures.
