Description
No. 8 Market Place is an 18th-century building that stands three storeys tall. The upper part is finished in stucco and may be built on a timber frame from an older structure. It features vertical wood strips at the corners, a moulded wood string at the second-floor cill level, a similar cornice, a wood parapet, and a pantile roof. The upper floors have one three-light window, although the glazing has been altered. The ground floor has a plain 19th-century shop front that projects out, with a central window of four lights and two flanking doors—one glazed and one a four-panel door—framed by Doric pilasters and an entablature. This building has group value with other listed buildings in the area, including those on the South-West Side, South-East Side, Market Hall, Market Cross, and the Fountain, as well as Nos 1 to 18 (consecutive) Northgate Street.
