Description
Nos 4 and 5 Market Place is a late 18th-century building that has been altered. It features a full-width pedimented front with three storeys of red brick above the ground floor. The second floor has a painted sill course, and there is a brick dentil string across the base of the pediment, which includes a lunette. The upper floors have three windows, with the centre one being false, and the windows are sashes with intact glazing bars. Below the first-floor windows are panels. The ground floor previously had a pair of early 19th-century shop fronts and a panelled door in a panelled surround, but it now has a modern double shop front made of Bath stone with a pilaster, which is in keeping with the character of the building.
This building is part of a group with other listed buildings on the South-West Side, the South-East Side, the Market Hall, the Market Cross, and the Fountain. Additionally, it forms a group with Nos 1 to 18 (consecutive) Northgate Street.
