Description
The Corn Exchange, dated 1857 and designed by W Hill of Leeds, is a large single-storey hall located on the southwest side of Market Place. It features a Bath stone front with four semi-engaged Corinthian columns and rusticated angle piers on a projecting plinth. These elements support an entablature and a stone balustrade on a high blocking course, adorned with stone urns at the corners and a central statue of Ceres on a tall curved base, which has moulded capping and swag and cartouche ornamentation. The façade includes two semi-circular headed windows and three eight-panel double doors set in arched openings, each with 'mask' keystones and carved medallions above. The overall front is imposing, with well-carved details and a design of good quality for its period. The north side elevation is also notable, featuring a plinth and entablature that return, a long range of similar round-headed windows, and end bays and the center flanked by pilasters. The parapet is decorated with urns over each of these sections. The Corn Exchange is part of a group of listed buildings that includes those on the southwest side, the southeast side, the Market Hall, Market Cross, and the Fountain, as well as Nos 1 to 16 (consecutive) Northgate Street.
