Description
No. 40 St John's Street is an early 19th-century building that stands three storeys tall, featuring a painted stucco facade with moulded coping. It has a gable end slate roof and two sash windows on the upper floors, which have intact glazing bars and are set in flush architrave frames. The ground floor has a plain projecting shop front from the early 19th century, which includes an original, partly glazed central door framed by narrow moulded pilasters. The door features lion head ornaments at the caps and a reeded head, with a rectangular fanlight above. The shop windows are made of plate glass but still display the original frieze and cornice above. This building is part of a notable group that includes Nos 23 to 41 St John's Street and a section of the National Westminster Old Bank in Market Place.
