Description

Barford House, located at No. 35 St John's Street, is a distinguished 18th-century building. This tall three-storey structure is constructed of chequer brick and stands on a moulded stone plinth. It features narrow red brick vertical dressings around the windows and rusticated stone pilasters that extend the full height at the corners, framing the central bay. The building is topped with a hipped slate roof and has a moulded and bracketed cornice, along with a brick parapet that includes moulded stone coping and stone blocks above the pilasters.

The façade includes five windows on the upper floors and four on the ground floor, with a central door that has six fielded panels and a rectangular fanlight with four oval panes. This door is set within a stone bolection architrave surround, which is adorned with carved scroll brackets that support a stone cornice and a broken pediment featuring a central ball. All windows are framed with bolection surrounds and stone sills, while the ground and first-floor windows have additional curved friezes and cornices, contributing to the building's impressive appearance.

Barford House is part of a notable group that includes Nos 23 to 41 St John's Street and a section of the National Westminster Old Bank in Market Place, enhancing the architectural significance of the area.
