Description

Dated 1749, as indicated by the rainwater head, 29 and 30 St John’s Street are a two-storey building. The upper part is constructed of red brick with full-height stone pilaster strips running along the sides. Notable features include projecting stone sill courses and block stone cornices above the first and second floors. A central stone bay rises above the brick parapet, with the parapet swept upwards over the bay and flanking pilasters, finished with moulded stone coping. There are five windows to the upper floors, featuring sash windows with intact glazing bars, set within moulded stone surrounds. The first-floor window within the stone bay is round-headed and framed by double Doric pilasters supporting an entablature. The window head itself has a double architrave with projecting voussoirs.

Number 29 was formerly fitted with a shop front dating back to the early 19th century, which has since been completely modernised. Number 30 retains its original early 19th-century shop front, featuring a pair of shop windows without glazing bars, housed within moulded frames. The shop door consists of a single fielded panel above a glazed upper section with a plain rectangular fanlight, all framed by delicate panelled pilasters. A plain frieze and moulded cornice run across the front of the building. A central passage leads to a yard at the rear, with a recessed door composed of four flush panels and two shaped fielded panels in the tympanum, flanked by stone Doric pilasters supporting an arch and keystone.

The buildings are notable as part of a very fine group which includes numbers 23 to 41 (consecutively) and a section of the Old National Westminster Bank in Market Place.
