Description

This is a mid-18th century building on St John's Street. It is constructed of painted stucco over a projecting plinth and has three storeys. A string course runs along the first floor. The facade features rusticated piers at the ground floor, which extend upwards to support pilasters. A central bay projects forward. The building is distinguished by an elaborate moulded eaves cornice that juts out over the pilasters and the central bay. The upper floors have five windows, all with intact sashes and glazing bars, and block sills. The central first-floor window is embellished with a surround of Doric pilasters, an entablature, and a pediment. The ground floor has three windows, one of which is modern. The central doorway features a recessed door of six fielded panels and a semi-circular radiating fanlight. A Doric porch with columns to the front and pilasters to the wall supports an entablature with a triglyph frieze. A recessed double six-panel door, with a matching fanlight, is located to the left and is part of a shop. The building forms a notable group with numbers 23 to 41 (consecutive) and the section of the former National Westminster Old Bank facing the Market Place.
