Description

Nos 25 and 26, St John's Street form a single block. The front of the building dates to the 18th century, although it fronts an older structure. The building is three storeys high. The brickwork is painted on the ground floor. A string course runs at the level of the first floor window sills. There is a dentil string course above the first floor windows. A parapet with stone coping sits above the main building line, and the roof is a Mansard style covered with old tile. The second floor has two windows with architrave frames. The first floor has three windows, the central one being a false window. Number 25 has a plain early 19th century shop front with four-bay windows and a modern glazed door on the left, all enclosed within pilasters, a plain frieze, and a cornice. Number 26 has a wide six-panel door, with glazed upper panels, set within a deep, three-centred arched recess located under the central upper window. To the right of this, a single window has four panes. A wing at the rear of the building is timber framed with brick infilling, and has a stone-tiled hipped roof, with irregularly placed windows. Nos 23 to 41, along with the section of the former National Westminster Old Bank in Market Place, combine to form a notable architectural group.
