Description
Nos 21 and 22 on St John's Street are a pair of buildings dated 1740, as noted on the rainwater head. They are three stories tall with a colour-washed stucco front set on a plinth. The upper part of the façade features a moulded first-floor string course and four Doric pilasters that divide the front into two bays. There is a moulded wood eaves cornice and a hipped slate roof. The upper floors have four windows, all with segmental heads, intact sash glazing bars, flush architrave frames with key blocks, and moulded sills.
On the ground floor, there is a recessed modern door to the left within an architrave surround, coupled sash windows in a flush architrave frame, and to the right, a wide 18th-century canted bay supported by a small iron bracket, complete with a frieze and cornice. The return front to St John's Court has a blank upper part flanked by Doric pilasters, with the string course returned. There is also a recessed four-panel door on the ground floor. The first bay of the adjoining row to the rear on St John's Court is part of No 22 but is described under Nos 1, 2, and 3 St John's Court. The building is reputed to have been used by General Wolfe when he visited the town. Nos 19 to 22 form a group.
