Description
The District Club, located at 27 St John's Street, is a late 18th-century building featuring three storeys and a basement. It is constructed from Bath stone and sits on a projecting plinth. The building has a first-floor string course, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The upper floors contain two windows, while the ground floor has a large window. All windows are recessed with sash glazing bars intact and block sills. To the right of the large recessed door, which has six panels and a circular center, is a semi-circular fanlight with wreathed radial glazing bars. There is also a basement window.
To the right of the building is a large three-centred arched yard entry, which features early 19th-century cast iron panelled gate piers decorated with diagonal and scroll patterns, one of which retains an anthemion crest. The curved scroll overthrow that once had a central anthemion ornament is also notable. The gates are adorned with spearhead rails and a band of spaced circles. Access to the front door is via four steps.
The District Club is part of a distinguished group that includes Nos 23 to 41 and a section of the National Westminster Old Bank in the Market Place.
