Description
The Liberal Club is an 18th-century building located at St John's Court. It is two storeys high and features colourwashed stucco on a projecting stone plinth. There is a wood stringcourse at the first floor level and a moulded modillion wood cornice above the first-floor windows. The building has a tall parapet with lead-covered coping and a pantile gable end roof with flanking chimneys.
The front of the building is asymmetrical, with one window and a two-storey canted bay to the right, which has strings and a cornice that extend over it. There are three windows in the bay, similar to the first-floor left-hand window, featuring sashes with intact glazing bars in flush moulded frames. To the left of the bay, there is an entrance under a window, which consists of a recessed door with six fielded panels in a plain stone surround and a stone doorcase. This doorcase is supported by Roman Doric columns on plinths, topped with an entablature and pediment.
Inside, the entrance leads into a paved passage that has a segmental-headed opening at the other end, surrounded by an architrave with moulded imposts. At the back, there is an early 19th-century front to the courtyard, which is two storeys high, made of colourwashed brick with a slate roof, and features two recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars.
The Liberal Club, along with Nos 1 to 4 St John's Court, forms part of a group with Nos 1 and 2 St John's Churchyard and the Tower Lee at St John's Walk.
