Description

No. 24 on St Edmund's Church Street is a building with a significant history, dating back to the 17th century, though it features an 18th-century front. It stands two storeys high with an attic, constructed of colourwashed brick resting on a stucco plinth. The first floor is accentuated by a moulded brick string course and a cornice that is both moulded and bracketed, topped with a bed mould. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles.

At the centre of the roof, there are two dormer windows, each adorned with moulded cornices. The first floor has four windows set in flush architrave frames, along with a central canted bay window that also features a moulded cornice and sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor has four windows in moulded frames, and there is a modern door located beneath the bay window, which is complemented by a rectangular fanlight with an arched intersecting glazing pattern. The doorcase is decorated with plain pilasters that have fluted Egyptian caps, and a small moulding that breaks forward around the caps and extends across the top of the opening.

To the right of the main building is a stable extension that is two storeys tall and made of painted brick. This extension includes one five-panel sash window on the first floor and a former yard entrance that has been converted into a period-style shop window with a glazed door. The rear elevation features a double-gabled front with a central battlemented parapet and a roundel below. In the gables, there are two attic casements, while the first and ground floors have three windows, with the right-hand side featuring tripartite sashes that retain their glazing bars.

This building, along with Nos. 2 to 10 (even) and Nos. 16 to 24 (even) and the Methodist Church, forms a cohesive group of architectural significance.
