Description
The Anchor and Hope Public House is a 20th-century building on Winchester Street, likely refacing an earlier structure dating back to the 16th century. It is constructed of painted brick with an old tile roof, and features four gables above the first-floor windows, each containing a two-light transomed casement. A decorative frieze and string course run between the storeys. The ground floor has a large mullioned and transomed window, along with three doorways and a double doorway leading to a passageway. A two-gabled, timber-framed wing and slate-hung gables are located at the rear. The building forms a group with Nos. 51 to 57 (odd) and the Anchor and Hope Public House. Nos. 51, 53, and 55 also form a group with Nos. 2 to 10 (even) in St Edmund's Church Street.
