Description

The Methodist Community Church, located on St Edmunds Church Street, was built between 1810 and 1811 and later enlarged and altered in 1835. This two-storey building features a stucco-faced, five-bay front, with the outer bays projecting. It has a frieze and a moulded cornice, as well as a band between the storeys on the projecting bays. The church showcases Italianate style in its design, with five round-headed windows on the first floor set in arched recesses, featuring marginal leaded glazing. A moulded string course is broken up over the windows on the outer bays.

The ground floor, between the projecting bays, is distinguished by a Doric colonnade with a bowed centre, and the parapet is panelled on the sides with a balustrade over the bowed centre. The ground floor wall exhibits banded rustication, with large panelled double doors at the centre flanked by pilasters. There are also panelled side doors with flanking pilasters, and a plain heavy frieze and cornice above. The ground floors of the outer bays include two narrow windows topped with linked segmental pediments. The entablature returns to the sides, where similar round-headed windows can be found.

The Methodist Community Church, along with Nos 2 to 10 (even) and Nos 16 to 24 (even), forms a cohesive group.
